Hey Google, Where is AI in my wallet?

Curiosity Sparked

AI is everywhere. Open Gmail—AI drafts replies for me. Open Photos—AI organizes memories. Even YouTube is quietly recommending videos that somehow know my exact mood. And with Gemini, Google has made it clear: AI is not just a tool, it’s a strategy.

So naturally, I looked at Google Wallet and thought: wait… why not here? 🤔 I genuinely asked google, whispering to my phone one day "Hey Google, where is AI in my wallet? Do you forget about him?"

The Paradox of Wallet

Google Wallet today is a reliable, sleek app that holds cards, passes, IDs, and payment methods. It’s safe, it’s fast, it’s functional. But here’s the paradox: while Gemini is being pushed into almost every corner of the Google ecosystem, Wallet remains refreshingly—or maybe suspiciously—AI-free.

Why? My hunch: Google wants Wallet to feel like the digital version of your physical wallet—lightweight, universal, and above all, trusted. Nobody wants their wallet to “talk back” when all they need is a quick tap at the train gate.

Are They Really Non-existent? 👀

Well… not exactly. Dig a little deeper, and you’ll notice that AI does exist in Google Wallet—just not in the flashy, headline-grabbing way.

  • Smart pass creation: With the new “Everything Else” feature, you can snap a photo of a membership card or ticket, and Wallet automatically recognizes, extracts, and organizes the information into a digital pass. That’s AI quietly working in the background.

  • Privacy intelligence: When sensitive info like ID numbers or medical cards are scanned, Google classifies them as “private” and locks them behind extra authentication—again, AI at work, but invisible by design.

  • Subtle verification features: Age checks and digital IDs are now supported with advanced tech like zero-knowledge proofs. It’s not AI that chats with you, but it’s still intelligent automation ensuring security.

So maybe Google Wallet isn’t AI-free after all—it’s just AI in stealth mode. It assists silently, more like a backstage crew than a spotlight performer. Which makes the question even more interesting: if AI is already backstage, what happens when we invite it to the front row?

Problem Space

But here’s where my curiosity kicks in:

  • Missed potential for insights. Wallet is full of rich transaction and pass data that could be turned into smarter experiences.

  • Fragmented ecosystem. Finance insights live in Google Pay (in some markets), while Wallet is kept minimal—creating a disjointed user journey.

  • User expectations are shifting. People are getting used to AI everywhere. Shouldn’t their wallet be smarter too?

Opportunity Space

Imagine if Google Wallet had an AI co-pilot layer, not intrusive but assistive:

  • Smart reminders: “Your flight is in 3 hours, boarding starts in 90 minutes.”

  • Spending summaries: A quick glance at where your transport budget is going.

  • Fraud detection nudges: Subtle warnings when a transaction looks suspicious.

  • Cross-app harmony: Wallet data talking to Gemini to give holistic life insights.

  • Credit card recommendation: At checkout, Wallet could suggest which card gives you the best cashback, miles, or rewards for that specific purchase.

  • Account optimization: Based on your spending habits, Wallet could surface smarter financial products—like a savings account that fits your spending patterns or a card that complements your lifestyle.

Why This Matters for Design

For me as a designer, this gap is exciting. It highlights how product boundaries are carefully chosen—and how design can bridge them. Should Wallet stay quiet and secure, or should it evolve into a proactive assistant? That tension is exactly where design explorations get really interesting.

So, I decided to take a leap of imagination. What if Google Wallet wasn’t just a storage app, but a smarter companion? What if AI could live inside it—subtle, helpful, and trustworthy—without ever compromising its core simplicity?

With that curiosity, I reimagined Google Wallet.👉 [Explore my design and research exploration here.] - COMING SOON
